The Experiment
What is the odd of two prime numbers be in the same function? Very likely if they are small enough.
What is the odd of two lovers be in the same room? Very likely if they really want to.
07:07 AM - 24/11
It had been 11 days from the first time he met her. He decided to forget about her and their strange conversation. He was not the type of person to worry about such nonsense. Whether they meet again on day 59 or not could not have any impact whatsoever to his life. He continued to walk his path as if nothing ever happened. When he least expected it, she appeared in front of his eyes, on the front page of the Monthly Science Journal. She had found a method to help autism children communicate better. It looked like she was not a fraud or scam after all. Why would she do anything like this ridiculous study at all? Moreover, she had put all her credibility on a risky bet with him. Now it no longer be something he could take for granted. It was a game that he was not allowed to lose.
11:11 PM - 24/12
It was almost midnight on the Christmas Eve, and he was still working on the new app. The main street right below his office building had already been crowded by people, It would be hard to find a way out of that thick sea of lovers holding hands, hugging and embracing each other. He really missed the Christmas Eve a couple years ago when he was abroad, just a quiet holy night with empty streets where he could enjoy his walk alone. He had never been on good terms with people. Unlike computers, those complicated living things were impossible to understand fully and difficult to troubleshoot without a standard protocol. He was always better off with machines and numbers, so he figured out a code for his life in which he had known all the possible outcomes under any circumstances. He had a script for conversations from formal to informal occasions, covering most topics possible. Social sciences was, unfortunately, not one of them, as he never thought about discussing such subject with anyone, especially a girl. Had he made a terrible mistake going to the Speed Dating event 41 days ago, which could possibly lead to a butterfly effect and change his life for goods?
For the past month, he had done all he could to prepare for all the prospective situations. He searched for her both online and offline, from professional aspect to personal life. Now he knew everything about her. Her university was just one block away from his office. He always ordered lunch delivery, and she always ate at that small coffee shop. She had lectures when he did not wake up, and he left the office when she had gone to bed. He lived in an apartment in another building nearby his office, and she lived on a house at the other side of the town across the river. Both of them had no friend and rarely went out during the weekends. So they literally had an almost zero chance of bumping into each other on the road. It should be an easy win for him. Then why did he still feel so anxious? What if he overlook something so obvious? It must be. She was so confident, What made her so confident?
01:01 AM - 11/01
Finally day 59 had come. He had planned carefully to make the improbable impossible. If he would not leave his apartment, she could never meet him again that day. Therefore, he asked for sick leave today. He stocked his refrigerator with enough food for the whole week. He prepaid all the bills so nobody would ring the doorbell. He turned off his TV, computer and mobile phone. If there was no connection between him and the world, there would be no opportunity for her to trick him into a second encounter. All he need to do was sat still, relaxed and waited for the day to end. He could also sleep for 24 hours straight. Then nothing could happen.
11:11 AM - 11/01
He woke up around noon. Looking at the clock hand slowly tick around, he was not sure what to do anymore. Should he just go back to sleep until midnight? He was just half a day away from winning, but why did he feel so defeated? He used be rational and pay no attention to silly social sciences stuff. Now he had to lock himself at home just to win that girl. Why did he behave in such a ridiculous way? There was no glory in winning this anymore, if he did not follow his daily routine and hide like a coward.
Suddenly, the fire alarm went off. The building bodyguards knocked on every door and asked people, including him, to leave. The whole building was evacuated for an emergency fire drill. Within a blink of the eyes, he was standing on the street, clueless about what else he could do now. The next thing he knew, he walked up to the coffee shop around the corner. Life was full of unexpectancies. Only a few minutes later, she entered the same coffee shop, sat down in front of him.
- Hi again. - She smiled, or is that an evil grin?
- Hi again. You won.
- Wanna have lunch with me? My treat.
- I’m not in the right mood for food now.
- Don’t be such a sore loser.
- How did you do that?
- Easy answer: By the strong will of a true love at first sight. - She laughed out loud.
- Stop joking around. - He raised his eyebrows.
- Fine. You have no sense of humour at all. So where should I begin?
- Let’s do this in reverse order. How do you assure that I will go to this coffee shop?
- Actually this is the part I’m least sure about. If the building is evacuated urgently, you will not have time to prepare anything. Having only a few second, normal people could only think of grabbing some valuable belongings such as wallets, phones, laptops, … With not much on hands, you can only go to a nearby shop and wait for the fire drill to be over. Lucky for me, there are not many stores within a walking distance, and I have enough time this noon to check every single one.
- Then how do you know there would be a fire drill from 59 days ago?
- They have this fire drill on the second Monday of January every year. You have just moved in for a few months, so you don’t know, but I have taught at the university for 3 years. On this day, my favorite coffee shop is full, so I have to find another place to eat. That’s how I know.
- And you know that I will stay home today?
- Unlike your prejudices about social sciences people, we do not all believe in fate and destiny. The first encounter is by chance, next times are by human arrangement.
- What do you mean by that?
- Do you remember how did you decide to stay home?
- The logical reason is that if I don’t go out, you and I will not meet.
- Knowing you are a guy who is always rational about everything in life, it’s easy to get you to resolve to that solution.
- By planning a thought seed inside my head?
- Good student. You are not stupid after all. I hired people to fake that Speed Dating event. Each of them only need to seed 1 or 2 sentences while talking to you. Did you remember: “I met a boy before who always want to meet me. So I locked myself in my room for weeks.” or “I usually stocked food for the whole week, so that I don’t have to go outside.” and “I would not risk going to work if I know he could be waiting somewhere near”.
- That’s how I did not remember anyone else but you. But you had to know about where I live even before our first meeting 2 months ago, so you can plan everything and state an exact day.
- Right, I knew it before. And wrong, that was not our first meeting.
- Then how … - He was totally confused by now.
- We met 5 months ago. You contacted me first, asking me to find a scientific way to completely forget a woman you used to love. You wanted me to turn you back to who you used to be before you met that woman, when you cared only about machine and numbers.
- And you succeeded?
- Correct. But I might have overwork it a little bit. That’s why you forget also me and our promise.
- Promise?
- That you would join my special experiment.
- So you set up this whole plan to get me into your experiment again?
- Yes.
- Why don’t you just tell me directly?
- We have no written agreement. Would you believe me?
- You’re right. I would not trust you. Now I still don’t.
- It does not matter. Our bet is our new agreement. And this time I want to have a contract signed. - She put a paper in front of him.
- Fine enough. I’m the man of my word. So I will do this. One question, how did you get my mother involved, so she forced me to attend the Speed Dating.
- No, I only need to slip the flier to a book you would unconsciously buy. And your mother, a typical mother, with a grown son who had just been through break up, would make her son go anyway.
- Why that book?
- It’s related to our previous therapy sessions that I’m not allowed to speak about or it will provoke your forgotten memories.
- Fair enough. One last question.
- Feel free to ask anything.
- Why must you go through this much trouble? You cannot find anyone else?
- No. It has to be you. You are not just a perfect choice, but the only one I have.
- Why me?
- That’s more than one last question already. We shall discuss this another time.
- OK. Suit yourself. - He signed the contract after a quick skim.
- Thank you. I believe we would have a great experiment and wonderful time together.
- I don’t do “believe”. Reality so far shows only unpleasant moments.
- Haha, be prepared. Thing gets worse.
- What could be worse? Will you kill me like your other lab rats?
- No, even worse. You will eventually falling in love with me!
She smiled and walked away, leaving him absolutely puzzled.
